From Life-Changing Diagnosis to Professional Trainer

Brad followed the path of many young men. In his early twenties he was a weightlifter, often in the gym six days a week. Yet he did not feel fit. “I woke up with pain every day. My lower back was so bad I couldn’t even stand up straight when I got out of bed in the morning”.

He was overweight and as he took up cycling, his situation didn’t improve. He began to experience stabbing pains when he pedaled. One day…the turning point…was when he simply leaned forward to pick something up. He heard a “pop” and suddenly was in excruciating pain.

He was diagnosed with degenerative disk disease, scoliosis and arthritis in his spine.

“I began working with a physical therapist that helped me change my lifestyle through exercise and sound nutrition. I slowly but steadily improved. I started to educate myself so that I could continue to reduce my pain and return to an active life.”

This journey of self-education resulted in a change of careers for Brad. He dedicated not only his personal wellbeing, but also his professional future, to health and fitness. “Now, nearly 15 years later, I am 50lbs lighter, stronger than I ever have been and can ride my bike 100 miles without back pain.

“It has been my mission for the past 12 years to share my experiences and knowledge so that I can help others enjoy the benefits I have achieved through proper exercise and lifestyle habits.”
 
Brad’s holistic approach to health and fitness has lead him to pursue certifications through the most forward-thinking holistic health and fitness organizations in the world. Brad’s philosophy on the integration of assessment, lifestyle and functional conditioning parallels the mission of these organizations and leaves our members feeling stronger, rejuvenated and successful.

When not training or studying, Brad enjoys cycling, yoga and playing bass guitar in several local bands that can be found performing around the city.

Chelsey Franklin

Ask Chelsey and she will tell you that when she was younger she had no idea what being healthy actually meant. "I thought not eating was better than eating. That running for 60 minutes on the elliptical was working out.” In other words, like many young people Chelsey thought healthy was “skinny at all costs.”

Only when Chelsey first arrived at the Bodysmith as a member did she begin to truly understand the concept of a healthy and strong body and mind. "I learned that looking skinny is not the same as being healthy. And I realized I wanted to teach other people exactly what I had learned.”

Today, Chelsey is all about creating a balanced lifestyle, and about teaching others how to achieve one, too. She knows that it can be difficult to make a switch, but that it is possible. "I want people to know that you can still have your cake and eat it too. Just don't eat it all week long,” Chelsey says. She enjoys baking sweets out of protein powder, a double shot of espresso and the occasional basket of french fries. She has also learned to love big muscular quads.

Dontae Franklin

If you've ever felt that you don't have the time to lead a health-focused life, ask Katie and she'll set you straight.

"I know it's not easy to stay focused on diet and fitness when you have kids, but it can be done and done well. I tell people again and again that with the right support, staying healthy will make your life easier, not harder." Katie should know. She's been married for nearly 25 years and has 4 kids, the youngest who has yet to hit driving age.

And like most of us, Katie has faced more hurdles than we care to remember. "After freshman year in college I’d gained the Freshman 15 and decided to make a change. I started running." And thus began her dedication to fitness.

But few roads in life are straight, and Katie's was no exception. She joined a gym and fell in love with group fitness classes. They not only helped her stay in shape, but helped her feel connected to others--like herself--who could too easily find themselves wrapped up in kids' activities from dusk till dawn.

"I loved group classes but found that there was always something missing. And then after many years and many gyms, I landed at the Bodysmith. I loved the people, the atmosphere and knew I wanted to be more than a member. I wanted to share my passion for fitness with others."

So Katie started a new chapter in her life. She began as an intern at the Bodysmith and earned her personal trainer certification. And no one could be more well-suited to sharing a love for fitness than Katie. She loves walking her dogs, early morning runs, golf, reading, spending time with friends and family and feeling strong. Katie's "inner circle" consists of her husband, Dale...her kids Ryan, Will, Katherine and Maggie...and two puppies: Max and Moose.

Maggie Doyle

Jen Smith

When Jen came to the Bodysmith in January 2015 she exclaimed, “I want to be fit, but I HATE exercise!” Many of us have felt that way from time to time, but she turned that attitude and her fitness around and that’s what makes her a great part of our Bodysmith Team.

How did Jen go from “hate to exercise” to “have to exercise?” She put in the time and started consistently attending our group classes at the Bodysmith. In fact, Jen now says that our 8 AM class became her “exercise family” and accountability buddies. As we all know, it’s often relationships that make the difference, and Jen has proven that first-hand!

So, by the time of our LBD challenge in the fall of 2015, Jen was ready to make some real waves. She had become an expert in her own fitness and nutrition and was able to lose 15 lbs of fat and 8 inches. She has maintained the progress gained throughout that 6-week challenge.

Prior to joining our Bodysmith team, Jen had been a stay-at-home mom for the past 18 years. She loved being able to spend lots of time with her kids when they were younger, being able to volunteer in their classrooms, serving as a room mom, acting as chauffeur to many extracurricular activities and more. Now, with her oldest child at college and two boys in high school she has decided to put her passion for organization to work at the Bodysmith.

Jen remains highly involved in Women’s Ministries at her church and has volunteered as a mentor to a Moms Group for more than four years. She has been married to Brian for 24 years and has three kids: Chloe, Cooper & Colton. Jen loves spending time with Brian, watching her kids play sports and encouraging others to meet their goals.

Kelsie Prall

Kelsie Prall

Kelsie knows the challenge of overcoming a significant injury. After tearing her ACL and meniscus playing soccer in high school, she set a goal of returning to her full, pre-injury form. Having to experience the challenge of maintaining a fitness program under difficult conditions, she is glad to be a part of the Bodysmith team who is ideal in helping everyone—no matter what their physical condition—develop a safe fitness and nutrition program that works. As one of our shake specialists, Kelsie provides a friendly face to all our members who come in the door, helping make their day bright. She attends Millard West High School and enjoys running, reading, watching films and strawberries!

Maggie Doyle

Maggie Doyle

Maggie joined the Bodysmith in August of 2013, and has enjoyed every minute of her work. As Shake Specialist and Assistant Director of Happiness she spends her time near the front desk, greeting every member with a smile. She loves the atmosphere and interaction of the staff and members, and has learned a lot about fitness and healthy living simply by being around the coaches at the Bodysmith.

Maggie is currently a junior at Duchesne Academy, where she is involved in Academic Decathlon, Peer Facilitating, and Student Ambassadors, among other things. She also enjoys Irish dancing, playing tennis, photography, and reading. As a junior, and with college in her near future, Maggie is excited to see what the world has in store for her. She can’t wait to take the next step in her life and education, wherever that may lead her.
