Lost 80 pounds!

"As a young man, I spent 15 years obsessed with bodybuilding and 'fitness.' I worked out feverishly and was even employed as a 'fitness expert' at a local tennis club for a time. Once my career kicked into high gear, I found myself working 70, 80 and even 100 hour work weeks for weeks and months at a time, and I lost the drive and ability to maintain any resemblance of a healthy lifestyle. By the time I was 40, I had ballooned up to 291 lbs. All of that weight gain affected everything about my health and life. Everything from my sleep to my career and, as you might imagine, my mood took a nose dive. I became depressed and apathetic about my health and my appearance. To make matters worse, early in 2010 I began to suffer very severe pain in my right knee. It became so severe that even driving was an excruciating experience, and I walked with a pronounced limp. I was told by my orthopedist that I had severe osteoarthritis and that both of my knees will need to be replaced at some point.

"I moved back to Omaha and began training with Brad at The Bodysmith in June of 2010. Just a little over a year later I weigh 80 lbs less than I did even a decade ago! My knee has improved dramatically, rarely causing me anything but mild pain or discomfort, and it continues to improve every day. Brad's entire method of training was a revelation to me, and I am constantly amazed that a former 'hard core' fitness buff could know so little about how his own body works. Brad constantly evaluates and re-tools my workouts to address my own specific strengths and weaknesses, and I have been absolutely thrilled with the results! Keri C.

Keri was an active, fit athlete in her teens and early 20s. When she moved into the world of full-time employment as a pediatric dental assistant, something changed. She developed poor eating habits--including a reliance on fast food, junk food and soda--and spent less time exercising, both of which took their toll on her health. She “had no energy at the end of the day,” and was very unhappy with the way she felt and looked.

With a wedding approaching, Keri, like most brides, knew she wanted everything to be perfect. So in October 2009, one year before her wedding, Keri called the Bodysmith to get her health and her life back on track.

Keri worked with the Bodysmith to develop a plan of action that would help her look better and feel better before her big day. With a focus on nutrition and exercises that she could either at the gym or at home, Keri soon got on the right track. Alternating between cardiovascular exercise and weight training, Keri was able to lose the weight she wanted to lose, increase her muscle mass and energy levels, and start her new life off right.

In the months before her wedding, Keri lost 43 pounds. Even after the birth of her child in 2011, Keri has been able to maintain a fit lifestyle. “I am much healthier and I can keep up with my little guy.”



Kellie R.

33 year old fire fighter

Some things just run in the family. For Kellie, it's fighting fires. Kellie's grandfather retired from Omaha Fire Department, her father was a Captain on the OFD, her step mother was among the first women to serve for the city, and her brother is currently on the force. Needless to say, becoming a fire fighter was something Kellie always wanted to accomplish.

She completed her first "practice run" of the fire fighter's qualification physical four seconds beyond the time allowed. Kellie then teamed with Brad at the Bodysmith and completed her second "practice run" a month later with a full minute to spare. Kellie then passed the official physical with a minute and twenty seconds to spare, a time better than several men.

Before working with Brad, Kellie spent a lot time and energy lifting with incorrect technique, neglecting her core and working only major muscle groups. "I often had pain that prevented me from completing my workouts," explains Kellie. "Brad took the time to comprehend the unique demands of the fire fighter's physical and helped me train specifically and efficiently within pain-free parameters."

Kellie is reminded daily of how physically demanding her job is. "You never know if you'll be lifting a 300 pound individual on to the stretcher or battling a business fire through the night gripping a hose with intense water pressure. Regardless, you have to be able to do it safely, day-in and day-out." No doubt, lots of people count on Kellie.

So she continues to train with Brad at the Bodysmith. Her latest accomplishment was to hoist a 40-foot ladder into the air all by her lonesome (but with the help of Brad).

41 year old elite level mountain biker

I started going to the Bodysmith when I needed specific off-season training. I race at elite levels for a local mountain bike team, my longest races being 70 miles. Training for that kind of distance requires a daily riding regimen that starts in the spring and goes all the way through late summer. By October, it's time for me to get back into the gym to work the muscles that get ignored during the season. Before the Bodysmith I had no idea which exercises I should do and because my off-season window is only about four months, I needed to get the most out of my workouts.

Enter Brad.

When I first went to Brad I was surprised at how thorough he assessed and tested me. It was more like a doctor's physical. He did some resistance tests, strength tests, and balance tests. From that data, he developed a program specific to me and to my sport. He then went through the routine with me, step by step, correcting posture and explaining why I was doing what I was doing. That really helped. Understanding the reasoning behind the workouts gave me more motivation to do them. I wasn't just punching the gym clock.

And he'd check up on me. He would email me making sure all was well and if I had any questions or concerns, or if the workouts were getting too easy, or if there was pain, etc. It was great to have that kind of follow up. He was very accessible and encouraged dialogue which made me feel comfortable asking him anything.

He also worked in tandem with my cycling coach and my other physicians. My coach lives out of state but we communicate by phone and email. Brad has been great about communicating with him to make sure what he was doing matched the pace of what my coach wanted. Also, last year when I was experiencing some bike related aches and pains, Brad made sure he was in the loop with my doctors, going so far as adjusting the workouts to encourage healing. Now that's service!

I can't say enough about the Bodysmith. They are professional and fun. Best of all, they really take into account the whole mind-body connection. They got to know me as an athlete and as a person, and made sure the training fit both.


Nina K.

56 year old wanting to reduce cholesterol

Nina Kavich is determined. Wanting to avoid the need for medication to control her cholesterol, she reduced her cholesterol by 30 points on her own through a combination of diet and exercise. Then she got stuck.

Nina wanted renewed motivation, a focused program and a health partner cognizant of her unique limitations. She wanted to get "unstuck."

Within six months of working with the Bodysmith, Nina had reduced her cholesterol by another 40 points through diet and exercise! Furthermore, Nina enjoyed a new posture, increased flexibility and noticed the once-familiar ability to work in her garden for 30-40 minutes at a time without having to rest on her knees and without pain.

Jane P.

79 years old retiree

She may be 79 years old, but Jane does not want to be compromised physically. In fact, her doctor asked her if she was depressed after discussing her scoliosis, stenosis and arthritis. Jane responded, "I'm not depressed. I'm mad!"

Since she began tackling her health condition with the Bodysmith, Jane no longer leans to one side, a chronic condition associated with her scoliosis. Furthermore, her neurologist has dismissed the need for Jane to wear a brace.

Jane doesn't have time to slow down. She has a husband, four boys (and their families) and three dogs to look after, including the newest member of the family from an animal shelter, Jersey, an Australian Sheppard.

Bay R.

66 year old with Multiple Sclerosis

Bay's doctor wanted to know what she had been up to since her last appointment.

Bay has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Maintaining her strength is critical for functioning at a level she finds fulfilling.

Unfortunately, MS presented Bay with the contradiction that exercise was key to her independence, but the condition itself was making exercise very difficult.

So when Bay was getting around without her cane at her last appointment to the neurologist, her doctor wanted to know what she'd been doing since her last visit. She had begun working with Brad at the Bodysmith.

Brad developed a specific strategy that enabled Bay to make steady functional gains within the limits of her condition and its inherent pain. Not only has Bay strengthened her legs to the point that she seldom relies upon her cane, but also has learned new techniques for rising up out of chairs and lifting objects without straining her spine.

It's not just Bay's doctor that has noticed how much better she's getting around, her friends in her MS water exercise class have noticed too. Now Bay mainly uses her cane to "bonk" Brad on the head now and again - she's still quite feisty.


Chelsey lost 11% bodyfat
and gained 9 lbs of muscle!

As a young, single woman Chelsey had a busy, unpredictable lifestyle. “I’m young so my hobbies consisted of going out to eat, then going out for drinks and then eating again at 3 AM.” Even so, she was able to maintain her weight and made an effort to work out. But, as the saying goes, if she knew then what she knows now…

“Looking back at how I used to work out and my nutrition literally makes me laugh. I thought going on the elliptical for a half-hour was a good workout.” She describes herself in the past as ‘skinny fat,’ meaning that she looked good in clothes but wanted to look good in a bikini, too. That was before she took an interest in nutrition, started incorporating weight training into her workout and became a member of the Bodysmith.

After a year, Chelsey has seen results in her body and her passion for health and fitness. “It’s crazy how much I’ve learned about my body and the things I am capable of accomplishing. I can feel how strong of a woman I am inside and out.”

Just as importantly as the results is the change in her perception about health and fitness. “The biggest thing for me is that this is my life now. I will be working out for the rest of my life and I want it to be doable.”
